Artist Statement
My creative process is guided by intuition and spontaneity. The 232.series emphasizes these instinctual decisions, as each six-by-six-inch work develops organically through layering and exploration rather than pre-planned composition. I begin with acrylic paint, charcoal, graphite, chalk pastels, Sharpie markers, charcoal powder, and oil pastels, allowing the materials to interact and guide the direction of the piece. The final result is unknown to me at the start, and the excitement comes from revealing the mood, energy, and presence that emerge through the process.
I know a piece is complete when the composition, balance, and material interactions demand the viewer’s attention, encouraging a deeper engagement with the details. High-energy moments are created through the fluidity of mark making, the dimensionality of acrylic paint, the intricate layering of Sharpie markers, and the chaotic textures of charcoal powder. These dynamic abstractions contrast with the underlying squared paper, which attempts to contain the vibrant, layered movements of the materials. The tension between structure and spontaneity, chaos and order, defines the essence of the 232.series.
